As I set off to experience a 37 dish dinner buffet, I found myself examining the very profound entrance of Bar B Q Tonight in awe. The twinkle lights at the entrance added a charm to the night. As I made my way in, I was warmly welcomed by a waiter dressed appropriately for the occasion. The room was lit with fifty or more recessed lights and the tables were aligned symmetrically. The napkins lay folded neatly on the table top with forks, spoons and knives perfectly placed in order. I had just made my way to a table that ought to give me some privacy, when a waiter approached me with a water bottle in his hand. The dinner buffet was supposed to start at 7:00 pm. I was asked politely by one of the waiters to make my way towards the buffet.
The sight of the food was remarkable. The tables were set in conjunction with the salads and entrée on the left hand-side. There was a live barbecue section that made the experience all the more compelling. I made my way towards the Fatoush Salad (Lebanese). Moving forward I was welcomed by a variety of chutnis. If you have a liking for sweet and sour, you wouldn’t want to miss out on this one. I was just finished with my salad, when the waiter quickly removed my plate and replaced it with a new one. Yet again, I found myself back to the extreme lavish array of food. My eyes were caught by the Corn Soup and I quickly poured some into a soup bowl. It was a soothing delight to my throat. Later on, I realized that I was standing amidst ten main course meals. It was the barbecue I was here for, so I rushed to fill my plate with the Safron Malai Tikka Kebab, Reshami Kebab and Chicken Behari Boti. The smokiness of the barbecue filled the air and I swear my stomach growled in response. The barbecue was a perfect blend of tender meat and spices. I was later welcomed by the ever famous ‘Charsi Karahi’. While, I had just started my main course, a waiter walked towards me with the biggest Naan (bread) I had ever seen before. Moreover, the crust and texture of the Naan (bread) was perfect. After being fully devoted to the Desi Cuisine, I felt that I had started craving the essence of Pan Asian. The first item on my agenda was the very provocative display of Singaporean Rice, followed by fish and tempura prawns. I concluded my night with a dessert platter to soothe my palate. I carefully placed a small delicate ball of Gulab Jaman, an exquisite Jalebi and a spoonful of Gajar Halwa (Carrot Sweet) on my plate. I was later offered a cup of Lemon Grass Tea which made the experience all the more refreshing.
The world is often unkind to new talent and new creations. The work of a critic includes negative criticism which is very easy to make. Last night, I experienced something new: An extraordinary meal from Bar B Q Tonight. It is needless to say that both the chef and the service of the staff have challenged my preconceptions about fine cooking. They have rocked me to my core. Bar B Q Tonight is nothing less than the finest restaurant in Muscat, Oman. I will be returning very soon, hungry for more.
